All About The Yarn

I just want to share with you a bit about the yarns used in my knit products.

For my Carryalls and Luxury Washcloths, I use Cascade Yarns Nifty Cotton. It is a beautiful soft yarn of 100% cotton. It is machine washable in cold and tumble dry on low setting. The color options are gorgeous.

For several of the Beanies, there is the option of Cascade 128 Superwash. This yarn is 100% Merino and is super soft, comfy and warm. I love to use this yarn as there are many solid colorchoices. It is a favorite of mine for Baby Beanies and “The Classic”, “Beloved”, “Into The Pines”, & ”Marija”. This yarn is both machine washable at cold temperature and tumble dry at low temperatures. As always, please REMOVE POM before washing. (Instructional video on my Instagram @heartandsoulbeanies for pom removal.)

For all other Beanies, Mittens and Headbands, I use Malabrigo Yarn. This fiber is 100% merino and from a family-owned company located in Uruguay and Peru. The fiber is hand-dyed in small batches. For more information about Malabrigo, please visit Malabrigoyarn.com. Most of their yarns will not bleed when washed, but to avoid the remote chance that it will, please soak in water with 1⁄4 cup of white vinegar for 30 minutes before washing. This yarn is incredibly soft and the color options are amazing. All of their fibers are hand wash/lay flat to dry.

How to Hand Wash Merino Wool:

  1. Fill the sink or container with lukewarm water then add wool.

  2. Wash with soap of your choice.

  3. Place the garment in the sink and push it down or place a plate or something heavy on it to hold it there. (DO NOT AGITATE IT.)

  4. Leave it to soak for at least 20 minutes.

  5. Drain sink.

  6. Gently lift out and place onto an open towel. Roll into a towel and squish the water out. You may repeat with a new towel.

  7. Lay it out on a surface of your choice.

  8. Be sure to “mold” into shape and allow it to dry. (A fan may speed up drying time.)

Why Merino Wool?

Merino Wool is super soft and comfortable unlike the wool of the past that was itchy, scratchy and downright uncomfortable. It provides natural insulation, is super soft and non itchy, moisture wicking and breathable, and odor resistant. It is also renewable, sustainable, recyclable or biodegradable, anti-microbial and durable. Merino Wool comes from Merino sheep - the breed of sheep offering the finest wool for luxury apparel.
